A tale of two city restaurants

Today at New China Restaurant, on West Main near High Street:

I walked in and was seated immediately. All the employees — many related to the owners — are busy and attentive. They are friendly, smiling and polite. Ours orders taken quickly. The appetizers arrive almost immediately. The rest of our order arrives very soon after that. Our drinks are refilled quickly. We are asked several times if any addition service is required.

Everything was delicious, as it usually is. I cannot think of a time I was disappointed here.

Earlier in the week at McDonald’s on North University near Pioneer Parkway: I am on my way to work. I foolishly thought I could grab a sandwich quickly. The drive through line was too long, but the lobby looked nearly empty. I parked walked in. Four workers were standing at the counter, backs to me and the other two people waiting in line. Two of them were managers. One worker was standing off the the side, wiping off trays. Another worker was literally leaning against the wall, having a conversation with the others, laughing up a storm.

After a minute or two be being ignored, I left. I doubt they noticed.

Lessons learned: Leave home a few minutes earlier, and eat lunch at a place that owned by a neighbor and treats you like a friend.

Hey Billy, that McDonald’s is locally owned, as are the vast majority of the chain restaurants you seem to think are the Evil Empire.
