George Carlin: Writer
Monday, June 30th, 2008As a writer, I found this Psychology Today interview with George Carlin — conducted a few days before his death — to be fascinating and affirming:
On Being a Writer
“I wanted to be distinguished from the ones who didn’t [write their own material], and I was proud of it, so I would say I am a comedian who writes his own material. And then at some point, I discovered what I really had become was a writer who performs his own material.â€
Which is probably why he was so good for so long. He wasn’t some guy standing in stage making funny faces and rude noises, and passing it off as comedy. Real comedy is hard. Writing is hard.
