Marc Cuban doesn’t have a shot in Hell of being the owner of the Cubs

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. If the Cubs are ever to make it to the World Series, they will need to be owned by someone other than the Tribune Company. The soulless corporate drones who run the Trib figured it out a long time ago: Creating a tewam that is good, consistently, over the years, required spending money to build a great farm system acquire talented free agents and hired smart people to run the front office.

Why do that when loyal Cubs fans will fill the seats and tune to the games anyway despite the fact the Cubs field a serious playoff contender only once ever decade or so. No doubt that buried in a vault somewhere is a a cost benefit analysis proving this to be true.

That’s why the I’ve long argued that Trib needs to sell the Cubs to  some billionaire with an ego so massive that he won’t allow the team to lose. Sam Zell, the Trib’s new owner, is not that man. He is more motivated by greed than any other feeling.

So Zell is looking to sell. One contender: Mark Cuban.

Cuban said he believes he not only can produce the cash but also the necessary goodwill to land the baseball team, acknowledging there is wariness of his potential acquisition of the Cubs because he is not based in Chicago and because of his sometimes-controversial candor as owner of the National Basketball Association’s Dallas Mavericks.

“My job is to convince everybody involved that not only is it a good financial move to sell to Mark Cuban, but it’s also, you know, a good partnership move, that I can add value beyond just my checkbook to not just the Cubs, to not just the city of Chicago, but also to Major League Baseball,” he said.

“It’s about being a good citizen. It’s about contributing to the community, and to me that’s viewed to be just as important as Major League Baseball or the Tribune Co. You know, what can I do for Wrigleyville? What can I do for the community? And what are the ways that I fit in and add value? … There are a lot of things we can do communitywise that can enhance my chances, and so I’m gonna pull out all the stops.”

Cuban would be the perfect Cubs owner. He will NOT be the Cubs owner. MLB likes the status quo just fine. The owners make tons of money — albeit not basketball money or football money. Life is good, with the occasional steroid problem. Or gambling problem. or dangerously exploding bats problem.

And if there is anything consistent about MLB, it is that they are determined to sweep as many problems as possible under the rug. That ain’t gonna happen with Mark Cuban.  The guy makes waves. He’s a gadfly.

They won’t let Cuban in in a million years. And that’s yet another reason Congress needs to take away MLB’s monopoly.
