Wikis are GOOD. Use them.

Posted by Billy Dennis on Aug 27, 2009 in Rants

Crossposted from Facebook:
Ever been in a work situation where training and support documentation was out of date or spread out across multiple formats, most of which weren’t searchable, let alone tagged? The Army has a solution: Wikis.
Using Social Networks for Training
If there was any doubt that social networks are becoming the norm, here comes [...]

Netflix bluray discs suck even worse than before

Posted by Billy Dennis on Jul 6, 2009 in Rants

From the Consumerist:
We have been experiencing a growing number of brand new Blu-Ray releases from Netflix that arrive with a small crack (usually 1-3mm, and sometimes only through the hardcoat part) along the outer edge that makes the disc unplayable. In better than 4 years we have had only ONE regular Netflix DVD arrive cracked, [...]

Pissed at pistachios

Posted by Billy Dennis on Mar 31, 2009 in Rants

The Nanny State has a hard-on against my favorite nuts, the pistachio. The feds are warning people to not eat them if they see them on store shelves. Here’s the rub:
The salmonella has nothing to do with the ongoing outbreak of salmonella poisoning from peanuts. Unlike the peanut outbreak, the pistachio contamination was discovered during [...]

George Carlin: Writer

Posted by Billy Dennis on Jun 30, 2008 in Rants

As a writer, I found this Psychology Today interview with George Carlin — conducted a few days before his death — to be fascinating and affirming:
On Being a Writer
“I wanted to be distinguished from the ones who didn’t [write their own material], and I was proud of it, so I would say I am [...]

Spam protection? Not so much with Yahoo

Posted by Billy Dennis on Jun 29, 2008 in Rants

Of the 12 emails I’ve received through Yahoo since yesterday, just ONE has been an email that wasn’t porn span. Meanwhile, I still have to check the spam folder to make sure legitimate email hasn’t snuck through.

Still missing the Acidman

Posted by Billy Dennis on Jun 28, 2008 in Rants

I used to read more blogs than I do now.
Oh, sure, I use my feed reader to keep track of the Peoria and Illinois blogospheres. But I used to read all sorts of blogs, from all over the place on many different subjects. I’m not sure why I’m not doing it as much these days. [...]

Enjoying the recession everybody?

Posted by Billy Dennis on Jun 28, 2008 in Rants

From a forum:
So I was sitting in a meeting with a few other developers and technicians when our conference room is invaded by other random Pathware employees. It turns out everyone in the company (~35 people) is being called to a impromptu meeting. Weird. The president walks in. He looks frustrated. At this point I [...]

I have come to a conclusion about Jim Edmonds

Posted by Billy Dennis on Jun 21, 2008 in Rants

I think the guy calling himself Jim Edmonds may not be the real Jim Edmonds. As a former Cardinal, I expect Edmonds to stink up the place, 24/7.  Therefore, I suspect that the guy with that name walking in a Cubs uniform bearing his name is NOT, in fact, a big bag of bird feces [...]

Meet my new hero

Posted by Billy Dennis on Jun 19, 2008 in Rants

This guy wanted to open a store that rented all terrain vehicles. Local not-in-my-back-yarders objected. Naturally, the local government sided with the do-gooders and against the guy who actually owns the property. So guy decided to open a porn store at the location. And he’s naming the joint after the most vocal objector.
Justice in it’s [...]

Here’s one that Chef Kevin should @!$&ing appreciate

Posted by Billy Dennis on Jun 19, 2008 in Rants

From Reuters:
Foul-mouthed British chef Gordon Ramsay prompted Australia’s parliament Thursday to push for tighter rules to protect viewers from swearing on television.
Ramsay’s programs are ratings winners on free-to-air television in Australia, but prompted outrage earlier this year when one episode featured the volatile chef using a four-letter expletive more than 80 times in 40 minutes.

Marc Cuban doesn’t have a shot in Hell of being the owner of the Cubs

Posted by Billy Dennis on Jun 7, 2008 in Rants

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. If the Cubs are ever to make it to the World Series, they will need to be owned by someone other than the Tribune Company. The soulless corporate drones who run the Trib figured it out a long time ago: Creating a tewam that is good, [...]

Educators at work: No dress blues for you

Posted by Billy Dennis on May 29, 2008 in Rants

Via WTAM 1100:
A high school east of Cleveland is saying “no” to two teens who want to wear their military uniforms on stage at their high school graduation.
Will McDonnell, an active duty marine, and Tony Workman, an Army National Guardsman, are graduating from Chardon High School in Geauga County.
McDonnell took extra classes and met his [...]

A tale of two city restaurants

Posted by Billy Dennis on May 24, 2008 in Rants

Today at New China Restaurant, on West Main near High Street:
I walked in and was seated immediately. All the employees — many related to the owners — are busy and attentive. They are friendly, smiling and polite. Ours orders taken quickly. The appetizers arrive almost immediately. The rest of our order arrives very soon after [...]
